  1. I m not an enormous Shakespeare fan However, this was offered free on the Nook, and sounded intriguing I really enjoyed it, and it actually made me want to have another bash at reading The Bard The main part of the book is an biographical essay, but the other parts are interesting too There are lists of what else was going on at the same time Shakespeare was working It s an excellent way of putting him in perspective It also contains some extracts from some of his most popular plays Overall, I d [...]

  2. A gap in my personal education was exploration of some of the classics While high school recollections of Othello and Romeo and Juliet don t make for a complete picture of Shakespeare s works, it was something of a foundation Baber s book is a nice historical perspective of how Shakespeare rose to meet the opportunity for greatness in an era that had others as well When peeling back the archaic language, there certainly is a lot of profound humor to be found It s a book worth reading to get pers [...]

  3. This was a really nice short but thorough history of the life of Shakespeare without touching on the controversial authorship aspect easily readable in an evening I liked that the author gave Shakespeare s source material for these numerous plays aside from the histories, of course he still didn t invent all of the plots from original thoughts The book starts off with a good timeline, a Who s Who of the times, and then starts with the biography.Good introduction to the Bard or a good refresher f [...]

  4. I wasn t completely sure about this book when I started it It begins with a lot of lists makes for dry, uninteresting reading BUT, once the author got to actually writing about Shakespeare and his works, I loved it There were so many of his plays that were take offs from plays written by others many by Christopher Marlowe Now I want to go back and re read many of the Shakespeare plays, but several of them I d like to read with the work that the play was loosely taken from as well.

  5. I don t know if this book is well conceived It seems to me that people who are interested in Shakespeare already know most of this and those who aren t wouldn t read it except maybe for a class I spent too much time in college studying Shakespeare both as a reader and as an actor The most interesting part of the book was the end, in which the author presented excerpts of famous scenes It was fun to see which of them I d acted in.

  6. Quick, readable intro to Shakespeare s life and plays, setting him in the context of the religious and political turmoils of the late Elizabethan and early Jacobean eras You can t do justice to Shakespeare in an hour, of course, Most useful if you didn t already know anything about him or his work.

  7. Good book it gives a good overview of Shakespeare and the time period Not the most exciting read, but it did really make me want to go back and read Shakespeare again It is also pretty low key and explains things in very basic terms, so a really easy read for anyone interested in learning about Shakespeare and his influences.

  8. This was a free nook book I enjoyed the historical perspective on Shakespeare, and learned some interesting biography I hadn t known before Despite the fact that I have a degree in literature, I feel very undereducated in my knowledge of Shakespeare This book is a good overview.

  9. Shakespeare in an Hour was a very short introduction to Shakespeare A short sketch of his life, the theater during his lifetime, and a few excerpts from his works I was hoping for of an introduction and how to understand Shakespeare s works I will have to read another book for that.

  10. Free nook book Great introduction to breeze through before tackling one of Shakespeare s works I ll probably look into other books in the series.

  11. I started this book and didn t really enjoy it I m sure someone will because it probably is very interesting to someone who is interested in William Shakespeare s life However I am not.

  12. A Chronology of Shakespeare s life and a synopsis of his works along the way Kind of interesting, kind of boring Didn t finish.

  13. This was definitely written by an academic Good documentation of what is known on Shakespeare and the period where the theater bloomed in England However, really reads like a thesis.

  14. For a brief but surprisingly thorough introduction to Shakespeare s life, times, and works, you could do worse Great refresher.

  15. This was a free book on my NOOK It is a nonfiction text about what Shakespeare s life was like and what influenced him to write It was great background knowledge and gave insight into his life.
