read it b c a library patron highly recommended it after I d recommended something to them which they really liked and they thought I d like this one only good thing I can say is that it s a quick read tries too hard to be witty, quirky and offbeat main character is annoying calls her parents mumsies and daddles wanted to gag every time just awful.

I absolutely love Niki Daly s picture books e.g Jamela s Dress, What s Cooking Jamela, Once Upon a Time, Ruby Sings the Blues so maybe my expectations were too high when I picked up his first chapter book seems to happen all the time to me these days It s not that I didn t like the story it s sweet while still sending out some important messages, the reader meets some great characters e.g a very different art teacher and of course the gifted Bettina Valentino , and the story is accompanied by so [...]

Although his picture books are terrific, I m not a fan of Daly s first chapter book The combination of zany first person narration and didactic even if supposedly hip art instruction doesn t work well together I got tired of the tone pretty quickly, and Bettina never becomes a fleshed out main character.

This reminded me a little of an older Fancy Nancy, with all of her fancy words and calling her father Daddles or some other silly name Then I realized at least for me , being fancy is cute and funny when you are Nancy s age but really annoying when you get to be Bettina s age.
